McClary Blockhouse
The Fort McClary blockhouse is the logo for this website which does not make a whole lot of sense because it had no real use during the Modern Coast Defense period this website covers. For some context, Fort McClary is located in Kittery Maine for the defense of Portsmouth Harbor. The earliest construction that remains today is from around 1808, but it was upgraded and modified up until the Spanish American War. The most iconic symbol of the fort is the circa 1844 blockhouse. In the 1860s plans were drawn up to construct a fort similar to Fort Knox in Prospect ME but only part of the fort was built. Large cut granite blocks still remain strewn around the reservation. The fort is now a Maine State Park and is in beautiful condition and open to the public.
