In 1914 a 40-foot Fire Tower for observing forest fires was built on a 192' hill called Howlands Park Hill. It was used by the Antiaircraft Artillery Intelligence Service (AAIS) as an observation post from 1942-45. In 1946 it was dismantled and replaced with the Fire Tower from [[Martha's Vineyard Loc 59A|Loc 59A]] which was built in 1930 as directed by town officials. The current tower was assembled in 1947 and is still in use today.
