In 1914 a 40-foot Fire Tower for observing forest fires was built on a 192' hill called Howlands Park Hill. It was used by the Antiaircraft Artillery Intelligence Service (AAIS) as an observation post from 1942-45. In 1946 it was dismantled and replaced with the Fire Tower from Loc 59A which was built in 1930 as directed by town officials. The current tower was assembled in 1947 and is still in use today.
