Land acquisition started in 1939 and was completed by 1942. Three separate reservations were formed and collectively known as Fort Nathanael Greene. The fort was officially named in 1940 and designated location 34. Four gun batteries would be constructed during 1941-44 and multiple fire control stations were also built.
